Research
S. marianum is native to the Mediterranean and can also be found in America and Australia. Silymarin – an extract of S. marianum containing a number of flavonolignans and polyphenolic compounds – is widely available commercially as a remedy for ‘over indulgence’. Studies have examined the antihepatotoxic properties of Silymarin and its potential for treating alcohol-related hepatitis, Amanita mushroom poisoning, diabetes and cancer. It is thought that Silymarin acts as an antioxidant. Milk thistle extract has been shown to exert neuro-protective effects in animal studies.
